Wash-Off Label Adhesives: How They Work & Why Beverage Brands Need Them

Published by Focus Polymers Technical Team · March 15, 2026

The global beverage industry is under increasing pressure to adopt returnable and recyclable packaging. Glass bottles are among the most recyclable formats available — but the label has to come off cleanly during bottle washing, every time, without leaving adhesive residue on the glass. This is the job of a wash-off PSA.

    How Wash-Off PSA Technology Works

A wash-off PSA is an acrylic emulsion adhesive formulated with hydrophilic activators — chemical groups that attract water molecules. Under normal conditions, these groups are dormant and the adhesive behaves like standard permanent PSA. When the labelled bottle enters the industrial bottle washer and is submerged in a hot caustic bath — typically 2% sodium hydroxide (NaOH) at 75–80°C — the hydrophilic activators trigger. Water penetrates the adhesive film, breaks the bond, and the label floats free. The entire process takes 2–3 minutes. Result: clean glass with zero adhesive residue.

    Why This Matters Now

Returnable glass bottle programs are expanding rapidly. In India, BIS is tightening requirements for returnable beverage containers. In Europe, Extended Producer Responsibility frameworks put packaging waste costs on brand owners. In Africa and Southeast Asia, returnable glass is already the dominant format for beer and soft drinks. For label converters supplying these markets, wash-off capability is a core requirement.

What to Look for in a Wash-Off PSA

Critical parameters: wash-off temperature (75°C preferred over 90°C for energy efficiency), duration (under 3 minutes is the benchmark), caustic concentration (2% NaOH is standard), zero residue on flat and embossed glass, and wet performance before washing — the label must survive condensation, ice bucket submersion, and refrigerated storage without edge lifting.

White Magic WO-1918: Built for Returnable Bottle Programs

Focus Polymers' WO-1918 releases cleanly in 2% NaOH at 75–80°C within 2–3 minutes with no residue. Before washing, it provides reliable adhesion through chilled storage and condensation exposure — the label stays on when needed and comes off when you need it to.
