Removable vs Repositionable vs Permanent Label Adhesive: What's the Difference?

Published by Focus Polymers Technical Team · October 7, 2026

Most label complaints that reach an adhesive supplier are not about a weak adhesive. They are about the wrong kind: a price tag that leaves sticky residue, a label that falls off when it should stay, a sticky note that will not stick a second time. All three come down to one choice made at the start: permanent, removable or repositionable.

The Three Types in One Line Each

Permanent: When the Label Has to Stay

A permanent adhesive is the default for most label stock. Once applied, the label is meant to stay for as long as the product is in use; trying to peel it off usually tears the face stock or leaves adhesive behind, and that is by design.

HX-855 is our general purpose permanent grade for paper and semi-gloss label stock, with excellent ageing so labels hold through long storage. Where your customer asks for compliance documents, HX-855H is REACH + RoHS-10 + phthalate-free.

    Removable: Off Once, Cleanly

A removable adhesive holds the label securely in use, then lets it be peeled off without leaving residue on the surface. The key word is once: it is designed for a single clean removal, not for being stuck back down again.

That is exactly what a price tag or a promotional sticker needs. The customer peels it off at home and expects a clean product. RM-9850 is our removable pure acrylic PSA for price tags, promotional labels, window and glass stickers, temporary packaging labels, retail shelf labels and quality inspection labels.

Repositionable: On, Off and On Again

A repositionable adhesive goes further. The label can be lifted and reapplied several times without losing tack and without leaving residue. That makes it the right choice when the user needs to adjust a label, or move it around as part of normal use.

RP-9500 is our repositionable pure acrylic PSA for sticky notes and memo pads, repositionable labels, removable wall graphics and decals, and assembly and alignment labels.

    Four Mistakes That Cause Complaints

    1. A permanent adhesive on a price tag. The shopper cannot get it off cleanly, and the complaint goes to the retailer. Price tags need a removable grade.
    2. A removable adhesive where users reposition. It comes off cleanly once, but will not hold properly after being stuck down again. If the label is meant to be moved, choose repositionable.
    3. A removable adhesive on returnable glass bottles. Bottle washing needs a different technology: a wash-off adhesive that releases in hot caustic. See our wash-off label adhesive guide and WO-1918.
    4. Skipping the trial on the real surface. How cleanly a label releases depends on the surface it sits on and how long it stays there. Trial the grade on your customer's actual surface and storage conditions before you commit to a run.

    Choosing in Two Questions

Will the label ever need to come off? If no, choose permanent. If yes, ask the second question.

Once, or more than once? Once, cleanly, is removable. Repeatedly, sticking again each time, is repositionable.

All three types are part of our water-based PSA range, made at our Roorkee plant under ISO 9001:2015.
