Acid-Resistant Adhesives for Battery Labels: Selection & Performance Guide
Published by Focus Polymers Technical Team · March 15, 2026
Labels on lead-acid batteries face one of the harshest environments in industrial labelling — sulphuric acid fumes, electrolyte splashes, elevated temperatures, UV exposure, and physical abrasion. A standard adhesive fails within weeks. For battery manufacturers, this is a compliance failure — regulatory labels must remain legible for the battery's entire service life.
Why Standard PSA Fails on Batteries
Standard acrylic PSAs are formulated for neutral or mildly alkaline environments. Sulphuric acid attacks the polymer backbone, causing the adhesive to soften, lose cohesion, and detach. The polypropylene battery casing compounds the problem — PP is a low surface energy substrate that is already challenging for adhesion.
What Makes a Battery-Grade Adhesive Different
A battery-grade PSA uses crosslinked acrylic polymers with acid-resistant functional groups. Requirements: resistance to 37% sulphuric acid, adhesion to polypropylene casings, temperature stability from –20°C to +70°C through charging cycles, UV resistance for outdoor installations, and high initial tack for automated label application.
BATT-1000: Purpose-Built for Battery Labelling
White Magic BATT-1000 is a water-based acrylic emulsion formulated specifically for acid-resistant performance on PP battery casings. It maintains adhesion and label integrity through prolonged acid fume and electrolyte exposure. For battery manufacturers in India, Southeast Asia, Africa, and the Middle East — where lead-acid batteries dominate for automotive, telecom, inverter, and solar applications.
Testing Protocol
Minimum test: apply label to PP casing, expose to 37% sulphuric acid vapour at 45°C for 72 hours, check for edge lifting, adhesive softening, or discolouration. Test peel adhesion before and after. Any grade showing more than 15% adhesion loss is not suitable.
